This Memorial Weekend and Day I didn't have any set plans as usual, I pretty much just roll with whatever heads my way. I spent my weekend hanging with friends and staying in the house blasting music relaxing and overall enjoying my time off from school. I enjoyed my Sunday most of all because I made my way from Queens to Brooklyn to meet up with my good friend Danielle to go to Dance Africa Festival. When I got off the C Train I saw Danielle's father whose known as Coconut Rob and her sister, they had a Coconut Juice stand set up selling a variety of blended coconut juices and smoothies. I found it so amazing and it really made me happy to see.
While at Dance Africa Fest there were hundreds of booths set up of people selling all types of merchandise such as handmade jewelry, food, clothes, music, textiles, etc. So many beautiful things and people were around and I even ran into one of my middle school teachers who I haven't seen in a very long time. There was so much amazing jewelry around that It was difficult to choose. I wish I was able to splurge on everything in sight, but I did manage to buy a $7 Gold Cuff, $5 Ring, and an amazing $10 leather wallet. Hope everyone had an amazing Memorial Weekend. -sabla`.
Every month since January I've been attending an event I feature here on GoldenSense called Paint & Poetry. Paint & Poetry is a monthly event that incorporates live spoken word performances, singers, rappers, painters, and just overall a night where artist of all dimensions come together to indulge in just that, ART. Paint and Poetry was created by eye wear designer Mojo Disco and for the month of May, unfortunately I was not able to attend Paint & Poetry but I do have a Q&A with the creator of Paint & Poetry himself here to feature. Meet Mojo Disco:
How old are you?
I'm Legal :)
What do you do?
I am a young mogul concentrating in eye-wear design, event coordination, and everything artsy.
Who and What are you inspired by?
I am inspired by everything from music to art to poetry. Everyday happenings as well.
Is there a difference between Mojo Disco and Hakim?
There is a huge difference. Mojo Disco is severything I ever wanted to be. The fearless soul. Hakim is serious and a part time healer.
I seen this footage about 2 months ago and why am I now posting about it? I don't know, but I came across this video around the time I went on a facebook rampage on the subject of talent. DJ-ing was amongst one of the talents that I posted about. Today our technology is so advanced that everything that took "effort" can easily be done with a touch of a button and that includes DJ-ing. For example, personally I don't see people "scratch" anymore, but I know it's out there. Back in the 80's and 90's scratching was something commonly seen being done by DJ's.
The video above is of producer and DJ, TJ Mizell who in the footage is DJing in 20 degree weather to Asap Rocky: Peso. Besides the hot mix Mizell did in this video, what I love most about seeing this is how I can feel the passion he has for what he does and it's clear he studied his craft. As I looked more into who TJ Mizell was I found out he's the son of the late DJ Jam Master Jay of the legendary Hip-Hop group RUN DMC. [Wow.] His father must be proud to see him following in his foot steps so well. (paying homage I see, hence the sweatshirt he's wearing in the video.)
I love this scratch battle for some reason. I want to one day attend a scratch battle, I'm going to have to do some serious searching for one of those. -sabla`
I'm a part of a senior elective Magazine class in my High School where we learn what it takes to run and create a magazine. My teacher encouraged us to invite people we knew who were a part of the industry of music, fashion, makeup, etc. to come in and speak about what they do and the path that lead up to their profession. The people I invited to come in and speak previously was poet, Hip-Hop artist, and event planner RIPMC and photographer Dex R. Jones, who I recently had a Q&A with here.
I've been listening to emcee MeLo-X for over a year now and he was actually the first music post I featured here in the beginning of GoldenSense. For some time I was determined to get MeLo in class to speak and even though I didn't know him personally, it wouldn't hurt to ask and based on the title of this post and the pictures below I'm sure you figured it out. MeLo's visit was also a surprise to my bestfriend Ashley who I shared his music with a while ago and after that shes been incredibly inspired by him and has actually been pressuring me to get him into class, so this was a tough secret to hold in. I was hit with a surprise as well when I walked into class and saw designers Coco and Breezy. The twin sisters are designers that I've seen around and been familiar with their eye-wear collection since 2011. It made the visit even more greater because students in my magazine class are very much interested in the career of music and a lot of us are heading into the fashion field (we are a fashion high school) so to hear MeLo, Coco, and Breezy who are living their lives through Music and Fashion was a great inspiration and experience.
A few of my classmate. Check out our online magazine that's currently being worked on. IFASHIONMAG
Coco and Breezy stressed that you're not to young to start now. They've experience kids as young as 15 years old approach them speaking about their business they've started at just 15 years old. Don't let your age, gender, or race hinder what you want to do because it's nothing but an excuse. And also, don't be afraid to be yourself. The spontaneous story Coco and Breezy shared with us about their journey from Minnesota working 3 jobs at 18 years, abruptly leaving their town at 19 years old to head to NYC to begin their business and just see what the Big Apple had in store for them was amazing in my eyes. Risky Decisions worked out in their favor.

MeLo- X shared that make sure you have a journey to share with others. Its your story that attracts and keeps people more connected to you and your craft that you share. I couldn't agree more.
Yes Indeed I have myself a instagram. Had one since 2010 actually, didn't realize it was social network till 2011 [haha] I just liked it for the photo filters. Well I post a lot of photos because... Honest Moment. I HATED wasn't the biggest color blocking fan for a long time.
Lots of people have been looking at color blocking as something new, as far as trends go color blocking is a new to people but color blocking have been done for years now in magazines such as Vogue. Since color blocking sort of hit "mainstream" I still didn't like it. Recently something in me made me think "mmh maybe it isn't that bad" due to some photos of people I've seen sport the trend in a subtle way. I don't wear much color and if I do it's always toned down with something very neutral, that's immediately what caused me to move away from color blocking, it was due to the overuse of extremely bold colors. Colors such as neons is something I do not ever wear. Above I created a mood board of some of the pictures of people, items, and color combos that I wouldn't mind wearing myself. I'm even opening up to maybe wearing some neon one of these days but as of now Im on the hunt for some beautiful pastels. - sabla`
On a last note. I need to know who is responsible for manufacturing these shoes. email me if you know ;)
update: So 5 minutes after I posted this here on GoldenSense and on GoldenSense's facebook page, one of my facebook friends hit me up and told me where these shoes are from. They're from Alba Prat’s neon old school collection. Now I have a new designer to keep on my radar. I love learning something new everyday.
April being the National Month of Poetry, Mojo Disco presented another Paint & Poetry but this one included a special "Groove Session" after all performances. This time around it turned out to be a smaller crowd which allowed a more of an intimate setting in my opinion but did not shorten a great time to occur. A few of Urban Word's poets came out to spit some poetry as well such as Briannah H, Nataja A, Ashley J, Dante S, and Katherine G. who just recently won the chance to be featured on Urban Word's slam team to represent NYC in the national teen poetry slam in San Francisco.
Paint & Poetry took place in Brooklyn at Jose Castillio's 3rdEye(Sol)ation Gallery which a lot of amazing art was featured. Some of the featured artist produced paintings on the spot in regular Paint & Poetry style. Artist that were featured included Shalonda Savage, Masha Mash, Mathamatics Paterson, Theo Mighty, Maya Brown, and photography pieces by Ishmail Thoth Ra. Be Sure to check out all photos of the event below and check out the previous Paint & Poetry events that took place from January to March.
